Which do you spend more of in your cake business?
Are you wondering what I mean when I say "time or money?"
Ive found that most people value one over the other. For me, when I started my cake business, I valued money far more than time. I would spend hours decorating a cake because I didn't want to spend money on the right equipment.
I even used the cheapest sugar paste/fondant I could find (supermarket brand) because I wanted to save as much money as possible.
But it meant I spent far longer doing the cake than it should have. Meaning I lost so much precious time. And I hated it.
Cakes were supposed to be fun. I started my own business so I could spend more time with my family, but I ended up working way more than in my day job.
I learnt that time is just as precious and important as money. Sometimes even more so.
So I started to invest money in my cake business.
I bought the tools that would help speed up the process, like a Pro froster, an Agbay leveller, ganache plates, and even a Pastaline electric sheeter!
I spent money on more expensive ingredients like Massa sugar paste, knowing I could ice a cake far quicker without the elephant skin and ripping!.
I invested in programs like Dubsado and Quickbooks because it can automate so much of the admin meaning I dont have to do it!
Where they cheap NO. Was it scary? Hell yes! I was making cakes to make money, but buying tools and expensive ingredients was spending that money. And at first it was hard.
But was it worth it, omg, so worth it!
The time I saved by using these tools and having great sugar paste, and having apps and programs in my business meant I had time to spend with family. Or even just time to myself which is so hard to come by.
And it also meant I could reinvest that time saved back into my business. I had time for social media, and time to create dummies, and time to promote my business, which all in turn meant I was making more money.
It took me a while to get to this point, but now I would much rather spend money than time.
